Benefits/Responsibilities

PAVE members will help to expedite the development of a safe and effective HIV preventive vaccine. Collaboration with others who share this common goal will enable PAVE Partners to evaluate decisions regarding product development that are based on the science, identify areas where greater efficiencies can be achieved, and use resources more effectively. Any collaboration of the scientific issues would benefit affiliate members.

PAVE Partners have identified several specific areas of interest for initial collaboration that include, but may not be limited to:

  • development of shared compatible (harmonized) protocols;
  • development of common immunological, virological, safety and other pertinent laboratory capabilities and reagents worldwide that would permit a valid comparison of data across all trials;
  • strengthening the iterative process required for vaccine development, with emphasis in initial efficacy trials on defining correlates of immune protection and enrolling populations at highest risk of HIV infection;
  • strengthening clinical trial site capacity in developing countries, including the identification of site development priorities and standards and the development and utilization of common training modules; and
  • working with host countries to ensure that the development of research infrastructure is sustainable and that the research attempts to addresses their public health needs. PAVE Partners and Affiliates agree to collaborate with each other to assist in preparing for and conducting multiple vaccine clinical trials in an effective and efficient manner as they address the complex logistical and operational challenges inherent in such trials, such as staff training and the development of consistent, high-quality operating and monitoring procedures and quality assurance and quality control laboratories.

Affiliate membership is determined by the PAVE Executive Steering Group. Affiliate members may be invited to participate on PAVE working groups or in ad hoc meetings, workshops or other fora. Organizations will be responsible for their own travel expenses to attend meetings.
